Question:

What to really wear in Vietnam and can extra-large sized (Size 18) ready made clothes be purchased there?

I would appreciate some advise please as there seems to be so many different opinions on travel websites. Whilst I don't want to offend, I am finding it hard to pack for my trip without including some long shorts (up to the knee) and some t-shirts. Buying clothes in Vietnam would be ideal but I am a size 16 to 18 (Australian sizing) and have heard that it is hard to purchase ready made clothes in large sizes.

Thank you for assistance!

  1. long shorts and t-shirts will be ok. when i visited two years back i had to buy some warm stuff (ready made) and found it quite difficult. i had to choose according to the size available rather then to my taste!

but you can get stuff stitched by a tailor specially in hoi an there are tailors at every corner. many people visit the country for that purpose.

  2. I visited with a young lady that went to Thialand with the Girl Scouts last summer and she ISN'T large sized, what I would consider large anyway.   She is about 5 foot, 6 inches and maybe 140 pounds or so.  She had a VERY HARD time finding clothes including shoes that were a size 7 US.

Good luck and have fun, but take plenty of clothing hahahaha.

  3. Wear clothes that you like and are comfortable in wherever you go.  It's true large sizes are not readily available but there are tailor and dressmaker that can make whatever you like in one day or less, the labor is very cheap and fabric are cheap also.

Shorts and Tshirts are goo outfit for Asian trips. But bring one set of at least good clothes for special occassions

  4. Hi ... I have been there 2 times and found it a little difficult to get clothes my size there ... but it was possible ...

the larger outlets will most likely have your size ...

in future trips I will just bring my clothes from here ... it is easier, I think ...

my first trip I was just trying to pack light, but I burned too much time over there trying to get my clothes to fit  ... had to find them ... then get them altered  ... all of this while I could have been out sightseeing .... you know?

here is a hot tip ....  if you try to buy shoes there? well .... if you just want to try a pair on to see if you like them ... they will make you buy the shoes. If your foot goes inside the shoe, you bought it.

  5. i am around the same size and couldn't buy anything... also be very careful about getting clothes made as i pretty much wasted 120 dollars on getting clothes made for me that were not up to standard.  I had four fittings and was still unhappy with the clothes... just make sure you have a reputable place.  have a great time  long shorts should be fine to wear.  you will also need lond pants, just make sure they are loose and a material that can breathe.... it is very hot..

  6. I am size 12 and I bought the size in vietnam is 36 - so if you are 18 you should buy the size 42 (from my experience)

  7. You could get by with taking a few pair of shorts, some very light weight slacks or silk type dresses.  Clothes don't take very long to make there; so you could have some made for you too.  Remember slacks for visiting Temples and some Restaurants at night.  Or a dress.  Have a good trip. Cheers

  8. A friend of mine goes there all the time ( married a gal from there) he says it hot, so shorts are a good bet. He also is a large person and has his clothes custom made while there because its so cheap.
