Question:

What to say to people buying rabbits??

Every now and then, I get these jerks that want to buy my Holland Lop rabbits to eat or to feed to their snakes. This happens more often than you'd think. Yesterday, I politely tried to persuade this man to go to a farm up the road that raises flemish giants for meat. He seemed not to want to drive that far, and was considering buying my tiny little fuzzy pet rabbits to eat. He finally realized they were too pricey for that, and left. I don't know what to say to these people while still maintaining a professional atmosphere. Do I have the right to decide who I let buy a rabbit? How do I get these jerks off my property and convince them not to buy one without being a jerk myself?

  1. "I am sorry sir, that is not how I wish to do business here. Maybe you can find rabbit food for you or your snake elsewhere. Have a good day."

That keeps a professional atmosphere but does not offend anyone at the same time. You might want to say something of that type.

  2. I would say that your rabbits are for sale to be pets....not food. You do not owe them anymore of an explanation then that as far as I am concerned.

  3. just tell him that's not what you sell your rabbits for and that there are places who sell rabbits for meat. there your rabbits, so you do have a right to sell your rabbits to who you want to.

  4. yes, breeders have the right to screen buyers..

one thing shelters do is have questionaires... make people fill them out and yes you can refuse to sell on ANY grounds...

keep your prices higher, make sure you market them as "PET BUNNIES" rather than "Rabbits for Sale"

when people phone you can ask if they want pets for for food, at that time tell them about the other person, and give that number out.
