Question:

What to say when someone asks "Why are you so quiet?"

I get a lot of questions like "why are you so quiet" and similar things. I never know how to respond, so I just try to smile or raise my eyebrows at the person. I really want to say something, but I am not good with conversations and comebacks. Sometimes teachers ask it, sometimes peers do. Any suggestions for responding to both groups of askers, separately or together? Thank you!

  1. Say,"i have nothing to say right now" or no comment.

Or I like to keep my thought private.

Why, does my being quiet bother you?

As you can see, I am never at a loss for words myself, I have the opposite problem.

  2. You can reply: "I have a lot on my mind." Only completely obnoxious person will keep on asking further questions.

  3. my fiance asks me that all the time. i just say " i dont have anything to talk about"  or "what do you wanna talk about?"

  4. Oh man, I wish I had that opportunity in life. I would have so much to say. Here are 10 somewhat perfect responses:

    1. Slowly turn your head towards them, slowly smile, put up your pointer to your lips and whisper, "shh..." then continue to smile as your slowly turn your head in your original position.

    2. say, "I'm waiting for an opportune time."

    3. Fake sign language

    4. Talk like a deaf person as you fake sign language.

    5. say, "Wait a minute while I think up an answer"

    6.  "WHAT? SPEAK A LITTLE LOUDER!"

    7. "I asked you what time it was earlier and I'm still waiting for an answer."

    8. Speak in a different language

    9. Point behind them. (Trust me, they'll most likely look and it'll be wicked funny.)

    10. "Sorry, I just had a stroke. What were you saying?"

Any of these would work perfectly. It will get you laughs and openers for conversations. With peers? Mmmaybe. With all others? Yes. Yes, it will. I've used some before. Good luck with everything, and if you do end up using any of these, please email me and tell me how it went.

  5. "There's nothing to really say/talk about...!"

"What do you want me to say??"

"Is there something I'm supposed to talk about right now?"

  6. i used to be considered quiet when I just didn't really know anyone in my school days.

So when i go that question, i had no answers and pretty much did what you did. Also for some reason i said i wasn't but didn't (feel a need to) explain myself.

If you want to tell them why, feel free.

  7. "I prefer only to speak when i have something to say."

  8. I used to get told that and then I got mad and started saying "just because I don't talk to you doesn't mean I don't talk" but what do you want me to say is good too. It's actually a compliment because they think you are interesting enough that they want to talk to you.

  9. lol people say that to me sometimes and i just like smile and i got i don't know... i'm shy?
