Hi, I am coming to the UK from Arizona in October with my son, who is 12. I was hoping I could get some ideas from ppl on cheap places to stay. I was hoping like hostels or something like that. We are going as cheap as we can so we can see a lot more...thanks.

  1. DO NOT GO to the wax museum. I know it looks cool, but it is a RIDICULOUS waste of money. If he's not easily scared, I'd suggest the Jack the Ripper walking tour as well; its very interesting. Its not to scary, but it can be a little frightening walking around hearing about a serial killer! Invest in a good guidebook; they often have age appropriate activities. I've also seen a few guidebooks floating around specifically for kids. Take him to a few museums; he may complain, but the British Museum is so big he is bound to find something in there to interest him..

On the cheap side, I'd suggest buying the book 'Fun for a Fiver or Less in London'. Some useless information but when looking for a cheap meal or tour its very helpful. you can get it on amazon (used) for .02 cents!

Before you go, do your homework. I'd suggest a good guidebook - get one that is for the average person - and it could save you a good deal of money.

  2. im 18 and i went this year and when i was 16 i think your son would like the jack the ripper tour it was only 8 dollars when i took it, covent garden is a square with street preformers that you can watch for a long time because they constantly change and they sell cheap things in the market there, most of the museums are free the science museum was pretty cool. some boat tours arent that expensive either.

  3. Hi - have you thought of the official Youth Hostel Association? (or YHA as it's known here.) It has a great informative website and is well regarded and established here.

Or you could try the Travelodges. These are modern, functional, clean but uniform budget hotels. Our family has stayed in both successfully and cheaply.
