What to take when rafting in Costa Rica?

I'm going to Costa Rica. While there, I will be whitewater rafting from Arenal to San Jose. I'll be rafting on the Sarapiqui River (class II-III). Are you allowed to take things like waterproof backpacks and stuff? And what should i wear? Oh and would class 3 be too much for a woman in her 40's that is scared to go on a roller coaster?

  1. You can't take a backpack on the rafts as you will have life vests and anything that isn't tied down will be lost.  Take a backpack with dry clothes and a towel to leave in the shuttle bus so you can change after the ride.   You need water shoes, tennis shoes or sandals with straps (you will lose flip flops).    Plenty of sunscreen.  Class 3 will give you a thrill but should be much easier than a roller coaster

  2. Definitely Mosquito Repellent and Sunscreen! Enjoy the ride...I have been to CR twice but never canoeing...so JEALOUS!

  3. You should also take some mosquito repellent.  If you go into the jungle, there will be plenty of 'skeeters trying to keep you company.  Go to the TicosLand website if you need any further Costa Rica information.

  4. They won't let you take anything on the raft with you, but they will lock up stuff in the bus - but don't take anything real valuable.  Class 3 should be ok.  I went rafting in June around Manual Antonio and it was a 3-4.  Plenty of slow spots then it would get exciting for a few minutes, then slow again.  I would recommend a swimsuite with shorts over it and easy to dry out shoes.  Don't take sandles with open toes and no flip flops.  Canyoning shoes are the best, but old sneakers will work fine too.

    Have fun!
