What to take with newborn on a plane?

My friend is getting married 3 weeks after my due date, so I'm going to have to book my plane tickets (3 hour flight) and pay the cancellation insurance in case I end up having a c-section, or being overdue etc and can't fly.

But, if I do end up going, what will I need to keep a newborn occupied for 3 hours?

  1. I know this doesnt answer you question but listen to the first two. As for you getting a C-section.  DONT do it!  You are going to regret it for the rest of your life.  Read the book Ina Mays Guide to natural childbirth. I did and had my birth naturally and it was beautiful.

  2. All you need is blanket, binky, diapers, wipes, formula if you aren't breastfeeding, and 2 changes of clothes. A newborn doesn't really need to be occupied. They spend the majority of the time sleeping if they aren't eating....and then they sleep then sometimes too!! Make sure you feed the baby when you are taking off and landing to help the ear pain. Have fun!!

  3. well your baby will be practically new - he/she will sleep usually ...

and if you are nursing - just nurse her during the flight so she can sleep .. maybe purchase a bjorn or sling to hold her in

  4. You should check with the airline about how early they will allow you to travel with a newborn - some won't allow travel before 6 weeks.

That said, if you plan to use a pacifier, make sure you have a spare, and  have the baby suck it on take-off and landing.

If not, you should feed at those times, as it helps to relieve ear pressure which can be excruciatingly painful for babies and young children.

Make sure you have any feeding paraphernalia you need for at least 3 feeds - remember you'll have terminal waiting time too. Pack a change of clothes for the baby, plenty of nappies/diapers (as well as plastic sacks to wrap them in) and a clean top for yourself. A light wrap to keep baby warm, as well.

At 3 weeks old, the little dear will likely either be eating, sleeping, crying or pooping - sometimes at the same time! There's not really much you can do to keep them entertained - lots of cuddles is probably most helpful.

  5. When I flew after having my 2nd baby, I just put the baby in a front carrier, and she slept the entire way there. She was about 4 months at the time. So for a newborn, it's most likely they will just sleep. Even on the way back during the day she slept most of the time. She was very comfortable.

  6. i brought my baby on a 3 and 1/2 hr plane ride when he was about 4 weeks old and he did great! he curled up in my arms and slept the entire time. he was no trouble atall... he didnt even wake up to eat, but as soon as it landed he was sooo hungry! i say go ahead, and i dont think you'll ahve any problems. but just in case i would bring a couple of toys or maybe a book or something... but dont take our word for it, wait until your baby is born and then you'll know what he or she likes and you can be better prepared. hope i helped.

  7. At 3 weeks all the baby will do is pretty much sleep.  I'd bring diapers, wipes, formula and bottle (just in case you can't nurse), a blanket, a pacifier and several outfits.

Also, remember the baby should be sucking, whether it's a pacifier or a baby bottle or nursing on the ascent and descent because the pressure hurts their ears.  The sucking will help.
