  1. First you need to research on what type of adoption.  Private adoption can be costly and you will need a lawyer.  International adoption is expensive and you will want to research what country you want to go to.  They all have different regulations and requirements.  Or, you can look into your local children's services agency and adopt a child from the foster care system.

The requirements and wait time vary between the adoption options.

  2. Locate your local welfare office and talk to a social worker.  Look on the internet for private agencies (and make sure they are reputable by asking the local welfare office/social worker before you begin working through them.

17 years ago we adopted our son.  We have been so blessed.  We first began with inquiries through by Gyno...then we went through a semi-private adoption service called Idaho Youth Ranch Adoption Services and 9 months later, we were holding our son.  Through the service, we were required to go to a few meetings, question/answer sessions with adoptees and parents who had adopted, we were screened through the state (fingerprinted and background/financial checks) and a social worker came and inspected our home and the room we intended to use for our baby.

After the placement we were then visited 3 more times by our social worker who just wanted to see how we/baby were adjusting to our new situation.  It was great.

We experienced a semi-open adoption and were able to meet with our son's birthmother as well.

You will really need to see what your state follows though as every state is different.
