what should i use for coyote hunting a 12 gauge 11/87 special purpose w/ a rifled barrel and scope, a 10/22, a 12 gauge 11/87 premier w/ a rifled barrel or a smooth barrel, a 12 gauge smooth barrel mossberg 500 with rifle style sights, or a .50 caliber remington genisis with bushnell scope? there is a road about a quater mile east of where i will hunt and a house about half mile over a hill to the south of where i will hunt. there are trees between me and the road but just a hill between me n the house should i worry about it with the 22 and or the muzzelloader? i was also wondering if it would be better to put some bait out and hunt out of a camo tent i use for deer hunting?

ps what is a good call (under $50) that will go pretty far and still be effective short range?

  1. 22 magnum with scope ,cammo clothes , white if snow on ground & a tapeplayer works good for me at 75 yards

  2. Use the shotgun or muzzleloader.  Scrap the .22 idea, it is not enough for coyotes under most conditions.

  3. As always it boils down to the right tool for the job. The shotgun will work with buck shot, but only out to about 30 yards.

A 22 will work close up too.

I guess I think that none of your choices ore ideal. Use a gun that can accurately shoot out 100 yards. Coyote are not always shot up close.

Go out and trade in one of your shotguns for a varmint gun in .223. May I suggest an H&R 1871 Handi Rifle in .223. It will only cost about 250 dollars, and can be rebarreled in the future for about 100 dollars in an array of calibers.

Regardless of what you shoot, you will always need to be aware of the back stop, and where your shot goes.

    Good Luck

  4. well dont use the rifled shotgun barrel when using shot it will just ruin the rifling and the 22 is a bit underpowered and if i were you i would pick the muzzleloader or  mossberg 500 using 3 inch shells in perhaps number 4 shot or 2 3/4 inch shells using number 2 shot and i would get the dogs pretty far out when using the muzzleloader since it will punch a big hole in them so get them out a bit past muzzleloader range and compensate for drop and use the lightest possible 50 caliber bullets because you dont want a big enttry and/or exit hole and i suggest spitzer bullets because they dont make a big hole and they wont penetrate deep past 250 yards using a deer size powder charge

  5. I use my AR on coyotes..  A3 with a 3x9 Leupold.

    62grain JSP or HP.

    Dying Rabbit call.

  6. G'Day mate lets cut the c**p go 4 the .223 or 243 i will say .223 don't like windy day's.And put a good scope like burris or Leupold. cheers  mate

  7. I use a 22, works for me!*

  8. the shotguns with bb or #2 shot and a rabbit in distress  hand call. are very effective up close. camo tent is ok ,but camo yourself better cause you never know which side theyll sneek up on you!

  9. Out of your choices, the only one I would use would be the smooth bore mossberg loaded with 3" mags using 4 buck or 1 buck, I would also recommend using a full choke, .22lr is way too weak to shoot an animal that size and drop it humanely every time, use the shotgun or the muzzleloader, good luck   PS, I always like Lohman and Faulk mouth calls, rabbit in distress, fawn bleating, and there are a few more that work well for coyotes and all predators for that matter.

  10. Your basic plan is good.

Any roads or building should of course not be in the line of fire, for even the little 22 can ricochet quite a bit off a rock or water.

So with what you have you could set up a tree stand or ground blind and call them in with a rabbit distress call or a pup in distress call. Tree stands place you aiming down at them making a better back stop than on the flat.

Then use the shotgun smooth bore with 3” mag 4 buck or BB lead shot. But any 3 in mag goose load will do also. So your shots will be 45 yards max for a clean kill. You could have the   .50 caliber Remington BP loaded with a sabot .45 cal bullet with you also in case you need to take a longer shot, that would kill a coyote out to 100 yards or a bit more.

I would forget the 22, for unless it’s a well placed shot the coyote will just run off and die, maybe hours or days later.

If you don’t care about the pelt that riffled shotgun barrel loaded with sabot rounds can kill a coyote out to 125 yards or more. But shot patterns with shot would be spread out in a wide donut pattern and would foul the rifling with lead.

My brothers and I used to call in coyotes in Montana. We had a blind and had both shotgun and rifle available. Or two riles each. The idea was to get them in close with a large open area they had to escape through. Once we shot as they were near the others would run across the open field allowing for long shots. And it was faster to just pick up another rifle than reload. We called in 7 at once one time and only one made it to the timber line. We used rabbit in distress and had a kids stuffy rabbit toy rigged with fishing line so we could move it. Just nail the toy rabbit’s foot to a stump and run the line to its head. Jerking on the line made it look like it was struggling. And call at the same time you move the decoy. They loved it!

Hope some of that helps. Good hunting!

  11. Use the 50 caliber, get up in a tree stand, use a squealing rabbit hand caller.* Forget about the 22, it is cruel and inhumane for harvesting Coyote.* These Varmint calibers work great,> 22 Magnum, 22 Hornet, 218 Bee, 222, 22-250.*
