What to wear in Italy in June?

I am leaving for Italy (Rome, Florence, Siena, and Venice) at the end of June and would like to know what to wear and if the style is the same in all these cities. I know shorts are taboo in the big cities but can you wear capri pants and sandals or tennis shoes. Are tennis shoes like coach acceptable wear? I don't want to stand out but I know it is extremely hot . What colors do the woman wear?

  1. All those cities could get very hot and humid during summer. Sometimes summer storms might hit Italy and you would need a jacket and an umbrella. Be prepared.

Capri pants should be ok, even to visit a church. Bring your tennis shoes for the unexpected cold or wet days and bring sandals for the hottest ones. Whatever color you will wear is ok but probably you know that black keeps you hotter in a hot day so wear light colors and natural fibers. Drink a lot to keep hydrated (a good way to try the many brands of Italian mineral water) :)

  2. Hi Gina, I'm going to Italy too. Its going to be great!

I have this website that my professor gave me, it might work for you: http://www.lifeinitaly.com/. Good luck and have fun, I know I will!!!!!

  3. it is sure that it will be hot...But you must know that you cant trust the north of Italy...It may be hot, and suddenly you see the rain for 10 minutes..So about Rome ok, but be careful in Venice you never know even in august

  4. Rome was pretty warm while I was there in June.  There was a cold front that moved through Venice though, so it was CHILLY from early evening into the night.  Florence was pretty temperate, you could get by either on jeans or shorts. Siena would be the same.

  5. Shorts aren't commonly worn but you could probably get away with a tailored bermuda type short with a fitted tank or cute lightweight top and sandals.

Skirts are a better option and can also pair well with tank tops to help keep you cool and they look great with simple sandals.  A crinkly prairie or peasant variety skirt will pack easily and it's supposed to be wrinkled so no worries there.

Dresses are also a good option.  With a cute and simple sundress you should fit in easily in the city.  A dress is also more versatile in taking you from day to night activites.

Sleek tennis shoes (or trainers) like the ones you mentioned are alright but they'll probably only work with capri's and shorts or jeans.  I think a comfortable sandal will serve you well, brands such as Birkenstock, Clarks Privo, etc make cute and comfortable styles-check out Zappos.com for more options.  I saw lots of Italian girls wearing the Birkenstock Papillio Gizeh and Birkenstock Kairo style of sandal last summer.  Flats are also quite popular in Italy.

Women wear all colors in Italy.  However, I would keep your clothing choices fairly neutral and add color with accessories.  There always seems to be a color that is popular every season and you can hit the San Lorenzo (in Florence) market and pick up a scarf or other accessory in the color du jour.

Have a great time, Italy is fantastic!

Remember to have a wrap or cardigan handy for entering churches where most don't allow exposed shoulders.
