Question:

What to wear on very warm day going snow skiing?

I am going to Big Beak Lake this Friday to go skiing. The weather reports say that it may get up to over 60 degrees. Now, in town, I would just wear jeans and a light sweatshirt or windbreaker, but I will be on the ski slopes?

I need to figure out what to wear that will not be too hot, but does give me some water proofing for when I fall in the snow.

Should I wear my ski pants? Or jeans?

Ski Jacket? Hooded sweat shirt?

I have not been skiing in weather this warm ever, but I am sure that others have and might be able to give me some ideas.

  1. I have skied when it is negative 45 degrees and when it has been 65 degrees, so i think i can help you. I advise you to wear your ski pants, good skier or not, watery slush can sometimes splash up onto your legs, (its usually slushy when its this warm. this happens to be my favorite condition.) I think you should wear a hat of some sort, because your ears still might get cold with the wind hitting you as you go up the lift. (bring a hat, but you dont have to wear it.) I recomend you wear a shell to a jacket if you have one. Some jackets have a thin outer shell that a warmer inside zipps into. Its kind of like a windbreaker. I also recomend a light windbreaker if you have one. I usually wear a sweatshirt or a fleece, but if you think your going to fall, dont. Bring mittins or gloves, you dont have to wear them, but windchill again may make your hands feel freezing. No need for ski goggles. I hope i helped! good luck, and have fun!

  2. Do not wear jeans. You will fall plenty of times then your clothes will be soaked. Last month when I went snow skiing, two people in my ski class wore jeans and track jackets and they were soaked. Buy some thin water resistant pants from walmart or sports academy and those will keep you cool.

  3. wear your ski pants with a hooded sweatshirt, and a t-shirt on underneath in case you get too warm.  falling in the snow isn't as bad as you may think when your wearing a t-shirt.  last april i saw a chick skiing in a bikini.  i wouldn't necessarily recommend that.  :-)

  4. A hoodie and sweats or snowpants over the sweats

  5. Layers!  Wear something light with heaver clothing over it.  You can peel down as it gets warm and add layers if it turns cold.  I would still wear ski pants.  If it is that warm, it will likely be wet.  You may also think about carrying a backpack to stow the clothes you aren't wearing.

  6. you should were your ski pantswell i dont no how good you are but if you fall when its 60 in jeans they will be soaked and i would wear under armor and a sweatshirt

  7. Personally I would wear  ski pants and a hooded sweat shirt, however only if you have a sweatshirt that you wouldn't mind if it got torn. Ski wear is usually well ventilated, providing it was not cheaply made.

Jeans do not give you the movement that you may require when skiiing, so for the bottoms at least, stick to clothing designed for the sport. :-)

Make sure you wear layers though.

  8. Once the temps start to climb higher I generally will wear a lightweight wicking longsleeve shirt over a wicking short sleeve shirt. I'll wear hiking shorts under my Gore-Tex snowpants and of course my ski socks and boots.

I have several pair of snowpants to choose from, one pair is an uninsulated bib, another are just uninsulated waterproof pants, and one is an insulated, but not-waterproof pair of pants....I would choose the waterproof, uninsulated pants for this mission.

I always wear gloves...even lightweight gloves in the spring to protect my hands if I fall. I never ski barehanded no matter how warm it is.

I wear an uninsulated ski helmet as well.

  9. I think the most important thing to ask yourself is how often you're likely to fall. When it's that warm out, the snow will be WET, and one fall will saturate a hooded sweatshirt (as some have suggested) to the core.

As always, I'd dress in layers... you can't go wrong, because who knows what it will be like when you actually reach the mountain. Snowpants are a must in any weather if you ask me... wear them directly over long underwear if it turns out to be warm that day. I'd probably just wear a baselayer and a shell on top if it was in fact 60... you can always lose the shell if you get too warm.
