What to wear skiing?! Please help!?

This is my first time skiing, and I need to know what to wear. On a google search, loads of ski-wear sites come up, but I dont want anything strictly for skiing. This is going to be a one time thing, and I'd like to buy things that can be work to ski and put to use for anything else. Plus, i'm not really willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a one time thing :(

So, I know I have to wear layers, but of what? Wear can I shop for simple clothes I can wear to ski? What's something that I JUST NEED to go skiing? Anything is appreciated, like I said this is my first time!! :)

thankyouuu so much in advance!

  1. Tinted goggles Light padded coat Helmet? if it's your first time.

Water resistant boots / Gloves / pants

    Have fun ^_^

  2. ski pants from places like target are needed!

  3. First off, wear layered clothing so you can adjust the warmth to match the weather and your activity level.

If you can find it, the very best bottom layer is polypropylene; it is warm, it wicks away perspiration, and it stays warm when it's wet. Avoid cotton, as it loses all of its insulating value if it gets the least bit moist.

On the upper layers, fleece is a good choice with a Gore-Tex or similar waterproof/breathable jacket. On your legs, a top shell of nylon or Gore-Tex is good; I actually wear polypropylene underwear, fleece tights and Lycra bicycling tights. You won't need as much insulation on your legs as on your body, since your legs will be constantly working and circulating warm blood.

For your head, WEAR A HELMET. Skiing helmets are warm, light, comfortable and they protect your head really well. (For why that's important, cf: Sonny Bono.) Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection; the best colour is amber, which increases contrast in the snow. Contrast is critically important, as it lets you see what the shape of the terrain ahead is.

  4. Depending on how cold it's going to be, just make sure you have enough to keep you warm.

If you're going somewhere where it will be consistently colder than say -5 to -10C, you will need to consider a fully insulated jacket/parka.

As a beginner, you'll be spending most of your time on your behind, so be sure you have enough for when your clothes get wet.

Baggy jeans are fine (room for long underwear), a warm jacket, scarf, hat that will protect your ears and good pair of gloves.

  5. Do you have an EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) store near you?  That is where I got good pants in a petite size (powder pants). They're insulated and have been great for skiing and ice skating - they are stylish and you can wear them around -- very warm and kept me dry in the snow! Plus in off season they pack up to a little tiny pillow size.

I think EMS has a website if you can't find a store.

At EMS I also got the long underwear for ladies (wicking type I guess it's polypropelyne) it has served me well when traveling to cold places.

Other than that I would recommend any wool sweater you have and, between the underwear and the sweater, a cotton turtleneck to keep your neck protected. I know you're not supposed to wear cotton, but between the polypropy and the wool it has worked fine for me, skiing just a few times a year.

Aside from that the only other special thing you will need is a good pair of insulated gloves that are waterproof.  You can get those from EMS too.

My advice: don't try to ski in jeans or cotton pants - you'll be wet and miserable and no one likes a whiny person!

  6. Nothing!  Ski naked!!!

  7. snow pants. gortex coat, good gloves, beanie, done
