Well, Nate, assuming that you are male, I would avoid the sundress.  I would also avoid going nude, unless it is that kind of party, or you want to make that sort of statement... or enjoy awkward arraignment proceedings.

What you should wear to a garden party depends on the nature of the party...  and who you are.  Your invitation should have indicated the level of formality that is expected - and if you didn't get a formal invitation and instead got a phone call, or an email invitation that didn't include the word "soiree" chances are it's pretty casual - though a "Garden Party" tends to be a little more formal than hanging out with friends.

If in doubt you should ask your host what sort of party he has in mind.

Honestly the overly slouchy / overly casual thing is so common that you could show up just about anywhere in jeans and a t-shirt and not get too much flack, but personally I think appearance matters and it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed.

For a guy, a lightweight, short sleeve, button down, shirt, a pair of linen pants, and some lightweight, comfy shoes that are not athletic shoes usually look very s**y.  Bring a sport coat to slip on if the temperature drops in the evening, (if you don't want it your date might)  or wear a long sleeve shirt and roll the sleeves up during the day.  

Thou shall not wear shorts or show off your boxers, even accidentally.

Avoid light colors as they tend to show off where you are sweating, and make sure you have on a belt.

Leave the tie at home unless it is required, in which case you will also need a lightweight jacket.

Fix your hair, and leave your baseball / trucker hat at home.

Don't forget the sunscreen.  No matter how s**y you think a harry mole might be, melanoma looks good on no one.

Your host went through some trouble to put together a party for you - feel free to return the favor by showing up looking like you appreciate his efforts.
