Question:

What to wear to the Gate Theatre in Dublin?

I'm an American who just moved to Dublin a couple of weeks ago. This will be my first theatre experience. I really don't want to be out-of-place by being either under or over dressed.

I didn't bring a lot of clothes with me that I would even consider wearing that night...but I do have black dress slacks and a dressy red shirt with black beaded design around the bottom and a pair of red heels. Would that be appropriate?

(there is also a dressy black skirt, but it is long and flowing and seems a little ott to me)

If I need to, I will buy a new outfit, I just need to know what to look for.

And, if it makes a difference, it's an evening performance on a week night.

~Thanks

  1. Don't fret, or go out to buy something new.  There is no dress code for the Gate.  It's the very opposite of formal.  wear whatever you feel comfortable in and you will be fine. Honest.

  2. I was just at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin last weekend, to see the three sisters.

I wore Jeans and a shirt and no one looked twice at me (oh dear reading that back it doesn't sound too good at all but I hope you know what I mean).

Generally at the theatre you can really dress as formally or casual as you want.  There's no set attire and self expression fits in very well the ethos of the theatre so don't worry just pick something your comfortable with and you'll be fine.
