  1. No towns in Amsterdam.  Amsterdam is a city.  towns would be in other parts of the country.

  2. I'm not sure what you mean as Amsterdam is a city and not a country, so it does have suburbs, but not towns

As to the good & bad areas, I guess it depends on what you personally define as best ( we may differ on this) - do you live in be in the middle or the action, somewhere quieter and more green, or somewhere which is cheap to live in but not necessarily a "good" area etc, are you looking to live alone or with your family etc........ all of these things make a difference

Of course the centre is always a popular choice (although personally I wouldn't live here), but as a result it is very expensive to rent and also the rooms are relatively small as well (especially in the historically older houses)  A lot of singles and professions like the centre as you are on the doorstep of the nightlife of Amsterdam

Another nice area is Oud-Zuid.  Contained with Oud Zuid are for example,

    - Vondelpark - which is the biggest park in Amsterdam centre,

    - Several museums including the Stedelijk Museum, Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijksmuseum

    - The Albert Cuypmarkt (Albert Cuypstraat)

    - Shopping streets (nice ones) P.C. Hooftstraat en Van Baerlestraat

ZuiderAmstel (previously Buitenveldert) is also very nice.  Good public transport network to get to the centre, and nice housing generally

Moving in the same direction on the border of ZuiderAmstel is Amstelveen which is actually a town in it's own right.  It is only 20-30 mins from the centre of Amsterdam, very green, nice housing, good area, great shopping centre & amenities.... but very expensive as well.  THere are many foreign companies in & around here and many Japanese & American expats live here, thus driving up housing prices http://www.amstelveen.nl/web/show?id=444...

Diemen is a little further east, but also a nice place to live as a municipality as well.  Connected by train and tram to Amsterdam centre it has a variety of housing and more of a small area feeling than in Amsterdam itself http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diemen

Also worth considering (if you want to move outside of Amsterdam) is Hoofddorp (moving towards Schiphol airport area) - great new shopping centre.  More of a typical family orientated area, but a lot of international companies are based here as well.  It is easy to commute to Amsterdam and also well-regarded

As I said - it's difficult to define "best" without knowing you as a person and your circumstances, but hopefully this gives you some tips at least
