What town is best to live in around ID and OR....not WA!?

Question

Alright, so I am looking around at some places to possible move to after I get married. I currently live in Washington State, and I want to move from here as soon as I get married! So since my family and my boyfriend's family both lives here in Washington, we dont want to move too far away, so we are keeping it to either Idaho or Oregon....possibly Montana.

I would like to live near a city, but NOT in it! Preferably a smaller outskirt town with nice countyside.

We would want to find a place that has lower living costs, and low crime rate.

Does anyone know of ANY wonderful towns like this that I should go look into. I would like to start narrowing down towns to go look at so we can have one picked out by the time we are married!

Lake oswego, OR is where i almost moved about 5 years ago. it's beautiful, and you can get nice houses for not that much. It's right near Portland too, and near a year round ski slope

Why would you want to move from Washington?

i live there ;). and  i love it
