My question is what town or village in Connacht would contain peat-bogs and have thatched peat farmhouses and such? The closer to the Galway-Roscommon area, the better. Thank you in advance!

  1. connemarra in galway contains many peat bogs and has a small amount of traditional thatched cottages. you can be in the area in an hour from galway city. there is alot of other tourist attractions along the way. a small village called glan, just outside oughterard (about 30mins from galway) was the place where the quiet man (the film) was filmed. there are a few cottages there. bt still there are many local people living in such buildings. well i hope you enjoy the area if you go.

  2. Attymon (pronounced= at-time-on) is in north east ish galway, it is close to athenry which has a heritage centre and a castle dating from the year 1247, There are no thatched peat farmhouses in ireland.

Thatched houses are mainly thatched with a type of reed, there would not be any farmhouses in a peat bog as subscidednce would occur and the land is not good for agriculture

  3. the bog of allen is Irelands largest bog and is 370 square miles. lots of largish towns lie close to the bog including newbridge and edenderry

the town of castlerea and the village of Ballinagare in county roscommon are surrounded by bog on all sides.

It will be difficult to find thatched farmhouses in this day and age.  Most are just fakes created for tourists, there are still a number of traditional thatched houses in west donegal but they are dying out
