  1. Stockwell, south of the river, if you want a connection with the Victoria line. Or how about Chigwell or Chingford?

  2. Clapham on the South side of the Northern Line.  Very trendy - full of media types and lovely bars and restaurants.  Huge sainsbury's, lovely common with sports facilities, gyms, picturehouse and an easy commute into central London on the tube but has overground rail and good bus service to Battersea / Chelsea also.

  3. morden is nice

South Wimbledon too not far from wimbledon

  4. I'd personally pick somewhere along the Northern Line rather than the Central Line. It is nicknamed 'the misery line', but in all my years of commuting I've never had more than a 20 minute delay on any journey.

As for areas, I'd stay on the North end of the Northern line (if that makes sense) and go for Highgate, Hampstead, Belsize Park or Chalk Farm. These are all affluent areas with some leafy surburban bits, but still close enough to central London. Rent is high, but you can find double rooms in flatshares from £100-£150. (And probably lower if you look hard enough.) Check out www.gumtree.com for prices and flatshares.

Areas to avoid: Kentish Town, Archway, Hendon, Colindale. They are all 'ok' areas, but a bit 'rough'.

For cheaper rent, look at Finchley. It's further out, but has everything you need and is fairly safe and suburban. From Kings Cross to Finchley Central takes about 20 mins.

Depending on your budget and where you'll be working / studying, you could consider Angel or Old Street, which are more of a city experience, and hence slightly busier / less safe.

Good luck with the move! :)
