No direct train service from LA to Shafter-you'll have to bus to Bakersfield, then continue on to Shafter.

There is no tracks over the mountains north of LA into the central Valley, but Amtrak, Airport Bus and Greyhound all run busses over the grapevine route. Since Shafter is just maybe 15 miles NW of Bakersfield (and not on the Amtrak line) Greyhound bus the whole way is your best bet.

Amtrak only offers its bus service as a connector for train routes, they don't issue tickets for bus-only travel legs.
