I am now 30 and have decided finally what i want to do with my life. I'd like to become a Primary School teacher. I have GCSE grade B in English, grade C in Science but only a D in Maths so i knowi'll have to re-take this. I have also enrolled to do an Access course in September. What i'm confused about is to do Primary school teaching does my degree have to be in any specific subject or would i be able to do something like IT or ICT as its called? As my uni here doesn't include QTS in the BEd, could i do a 3 year degree in Education and then do a years teacher training course? Hope someone can help.

  1. Guides for Specific Careers

These sites are packed with information about planning your career. What kind of training or education is required? What can you earn? What kind of environment will you work in? What's hot? What's not?

  2. You have to minimally have a Bachelor's degree. The college can evaluate what you will need to take. The Bachelor's does not have to be specific in any subject. Secondly, you will need to continue, minimally, for a year to receive a teacher's certification from that accredited college. That will include coursework in teaching and student teaching. It's really different, as well, in each state, so you will need to check out your stated department of education website in order to determine what further schooling beyond the B.A. is needed. Some states in dire need of teachers will also offer emergency certification in teaching, but, again, you minimally need a B.A. It's a process, but if you really want to do it, ensure that you re taking the right steps.

  3. You can do a Bachelor of Education which would directly train you for teaching (the best route I think).

An alternative is to do another degree then do a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate of Education)

Finally get a degree and then get training in school by doing a Graduate Teaching Programme (the hardest to get on to).

Good luck with whichever route you choose.

  4. You can do both routes that you have stated - so either a degree in ICT and then a PGCE or alternatively do the degree in education and then do the PGCE. Personally if you are sure that you want to become a primary school teacher, then I would do the degree in education as it is a more varied degree and focuses on more than one aspect, where as ICT is solely based on that! However if you do the ICT degree it keeps your options open and you could go onto do a pgce in either primary or secondary.

    Hope this helps you!
