What training drills do you recommend for me to become a better swimmer?

I am going to join the coast guard soon and wish to get into shape and I know swimming is a requirement and and looking for suggestions on how to get into better shape through swimming exercises. Any advice?

  1. Practice swimming long distance in open water as you will have to as a coast guard and open water swimming is harder than swimming in a pool. Also swim different kinds of sets in the pool and switch up your strokes: 3 sets of 50 free (or other stroke) on 1 min (change the time to fit your ability, Im unsure of how much prior training you have had. The point is to make the set difficult for yourself) Swim a T-30 (swim at an aggressive pace for 30 min straight) Swim kick sets.

    Also running is an excellent cross training activity for swimming. Run stairs and in the sand.
