  1. Settle to Carlisle - very scenic and pretty.  or any train that takes you through the stunning scottish highlands.

  2. Two trips I made this past January when on a trip to the UK stand out:

    1) London down to Torquay in Devon was a very scenic route.

2). The Eastcoast GNER line from London to Edinburgh. I got on midway, but it was a very scenic few hours.

  3. depends on where your going.

there are different companies now after the govt privatised

say for example you were in London and wanted to go to

the north : Scotland or York  or Leeds   youd be on GNER.

Theres a national rail phone number you can use from the

US or google it and go their website and it will tell you which company like GNER, or any of the many others run the route you want

  4. I've never been to Britain, but visit http://www.seat61.com. The gentleman who runs the site has a truly exhaustive knowledge of train travel worldwide and hails from the UK. I used his information for planning a trip to Southeast Asia.

    (Incidentally, he agrees with Scubasmurf.)

  5. Settle to Carlisle

    West of Exeter to Plymouth/Penzance

    Heart of Wales line

Glasgow to Fort William and thence to Mallaig (regular steam services each summer until end of September)

    Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh

These are all scenic routes. For speed, either the East Coast Mainline - London, Kings Cross to Edinburgh or the West Coast London,  Euston to Glasgow
