  1. Patience is the main one

Knowledge of what they are teaching and how to adapt it to suit different children's learning styles

    Sense of humor

    MUST LOVE KIDS

Not sure whether the top one or the last one are the most important I think they probably have the same weight.

Understanding of children, for a special edcuation teacher also understanding of different disabilities (specifically the ones the children they are teaching have) and how parents react to children.

  2. My son was dx'd with Asperger's Syndrome this year and he is in a regular classroom.  I say this because it ties into my answer on what makes a great teacher (not just a special ed teacher, even though I understand that their jobs require more understanding).

What makes a great teacher is someone who goes out of their way to make sure that they do whatever they can to ensure their students reach their potential.  They realize that no two students are alike and helping them set individual goals one step at a time reduces their chance of failure.

One who isn't afraid to communicate and build a relationship with the parents of their students to help understand them better.  One who understands that with exceptional students comes obstacles that shouldn't be taken personally.

Most and foremost...someone who is teaching because they love children and want to educate them.

  3. Patience!!!!!!!!! Knowing they learn little by little and that you are making a difference in their lives.

  4. My daughter teaches and evaluates special kids in an k1-6 school. She is very well thought of by her district. As a person she shows empathy, compassion and a desire to really make a difference in someone's life and the world in general coupled with the patience to make things happen..

Anyone can teach a normal kid. It takes a dedicated teacher to help those who don't have the capability normal kids have.

Basically, she is a better person than I am or ever could be. I admire her very much.

It's sad that she will never be able to afford to buy a home in her district. Although she is appreciated, she is a bit underpaid for what she does.

  5. I'm a 6th grade teacher and think being a good teacher is being honest and being good to your kids you. Some teachers are just so mean and hate there kids. One of the teachers at the school I work has been fired and is now working as a teacher for younger kids. I also think that being a good teacher means not being lazy and grading your papers on time. And the same teacher that got fired took almost 2 quarters to get something graded

  6. A sense of humor.

A good listener (to student, parents and collegues)

Takes the time to learn what makes each student tick and what is motivating.

The ability to check their ego at the door.
