I'd rather not fly but will do so if there's no other option, and I was wondering about a timeline eg: 5hr train trip?

  1. From BKK to Phuket

    By bus

Air-conditioned and non air-conditioned buses leave Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal for Phuket several times daily. Trips by air-conditioned bus, which normally leaves in the evening, take about 13 hours.

    Call 0 2434 7192, 0 2435 1199 or visit www.transport.co.th for more information.

    By rail

There is no direct train service to Phuket. Travelers arriving by train must get off at Phun Phin Railway Station in Surat Thani Province and continue by regular bus to Phuket. For more information, call the State Railway of Thailand, 1690, 0 2223 7010, or 0 2223 7020.

For travel Phuket I recommend by air is better because they are many budget air line from BKK to Phuket. Please find more information from here...http://www.thaifly.com/1699.html

  3. you can use thai airlines

  4. there's the busses, there's the airplanes (land at a cool outdoor airport at koh samui), and there's what i did last month/this month: the train. i left bangkok at 7:45 p.m. and rode second-class down to sarat thani, arriving at 6 a.m. or something. second class was comfortable, private enough, and cost 578 baht (about 17 bucks US). then you get on a bus at the train station and ride for about an hour and a half to a ferry port, take the ferry for an hour and a half across the gulf of thailand, then hit land on the west coast of koh samui. if you have a hotel already set up, you can get a taxi from there. i didn't, so i paid 200 baht (a very good deal) for a minivan that drove me and some others around to different hotels in chaweng and lamai (the two main cities). on the way back, after two blissful weeks, i took a special diesel rail car back from sarat thani (10:40 a.m.) to bangkok (7:45 p.m.)...

i would not recommend this method of voyaging, however...i like taking trains to enjoy the scenery, but the green jungleness and the backs of houses in small, rural villages was not really that awe-inspiring. and it seemed to take a long time. i'll be going back to koh samui -- i loved it - but next time i'll fly...

  5. If you don't want to fly (which is the best way) then the bus is your other obtain.  You can go to a travel agent and have him book one for you (I don't recommend this) or go to the Southern Bus Terminal and caught a government bus.  Best is the 24 or 32 passenger bus which have a/c.  It will take about 12 to 13 hours to get to Phuket or the ferry in Surat Thani, most buses travel in the evening so you can sleep on the bus.  If you alone try the 24 passenger bus, if with some then the 32 is fine.  Cost is somewhere between 900 to 1,000 baht.  I think you can fly Air Asia for less then 2,000 baht in one hour and about 20 minutes.  Flying to Koh Samui is more expensive and only Thai Airways or Bangkok Airways fly direct to Samui.    Your choice.
