I am having a hard time keeping my hand in front of the ball and thus continually hit big draws with my mid irons. Do you have any practice tips on fixing this problem?

  1. I agree with some of the above answers in that the correct setup is very important. After that, the transition from the backswing to the downswing can be what makes a good straight shot or not.

If your setup and transition are good then you shouldn't have to concentrate on what happens to your hands. Slow motion video has shown that your body will be out in front of the club followed by the hands which will lead the club all the way down to impact.

Try starting your transition with a weight shift back to your left foot. Then move your left knee towards the target, then the left hip moves towards the target, followed by the left shoulder and finally your hands should move. Just watch a slow motion video of the Tiger Woods golf swing and you will immediately see these sequences.

  2. you keep your hands in front of the ball... you send a shot flying straight right.

you want your hands synchronized with the ball so that you're rotating your wrists.  you don't want to swing with your hands.

you're going to become incredibly inconsistent if you swing with your hands.  believe me more than anyone else answering this question.

SWING WITH YOUR ARMS AND WRISTS, NOT YOUR HANDS.  ROTATE THE CLUB UP IN THE BACKSWING, ROTATE THE CLUB UP IN THE FOLLOW-THROUGH.

it's as easy as that.  if your spray right or pulling left, you will then know what you did.

  3. Try to force yourself NOT to release. Hold that wirst break for as long as possible.  Believe me, you'll release naturally and promote either a very good fade or a nice straight shot every time!

  4. have the felling in your left wrist that it is facing the ground past impct . your release is just to early . mone ball back a touch in . your stance .try a few swings left hand on club only , swing slowly down , with the feeling you left wrist is flat pointing to ground . the wrist will not point to the ground , but a pro will charge you 45 per lesson , plus make it too complicated to understand . this one works .

  5. Having your hands to far ahead of the ball before you swing or at impact delofts the club. If your hands are ahead of the ball 1/2 inch at setup then your takeaway and backswing Will tend to go slightly to the inside which is ideal to hit a light draw an impact the ball from the inside slightly. In golf you need to be a machine how you set up to the golf ball translates into how you will hit it at impact! You say you want your hands to be more in front then start out that way and experiment. Beware though if you over do it you may develop a bad push or a flipped smothered shot to the left.
