Winter wheat and turnips.  The plots are no good until a hard freeze, but when that happens we have the majority of local deer visit them.

i live in central South Carolina and we planted turnips and cowpeas 8 days ago. rain hit 3 days later, just right. what did you have in mind to plant?

I live in MN and have had good luck with Rape and Turnips. Any of the barassica family of plants seems to work well. They are full of starch before the frost hits and when it does all that starch turns into sugar. That first frost usually comes around the rut so it works out very well that the deer have a sweet tooth!! The other thing that is nice is the leaves are very big and provide a lot of tonage for a small plot. Usually about 1/2 acre plots so I can cover most of the plot with my bow. This year I mixed in some peas and oat just to see how that would work but I have only had my cameras out for a couple of weeks and dont really know yet. My buddy put in a ton of stuff this year and the deer are really pounding his cowpeas right now.

i see people spending a ton of money on food plots. it is very cheap. i use black eyed peas and turnip greens.just scatter the seed across the ground.get a leaf rake and then drag the rake across the area you spread the seed.places that have apples are great but are not always the right answer. sometimes the big guys look for something different and out of the way.

The place I work at sells 50# bags of mixed seed that includes wheat, oats, clover and some grass seed. It seems to come up well without much rain. Just lightly cover it and possibly throw down some mixed fertilizer.
