What type gun does a police officer carry?

I just need to know what type and how many bullets it can hold. I know some handguns vary, so I was thinking which type of gun would be more common in a town. Like a town of let's say 10,000-15,000 people.

Also, I always see a shotgun in the police cruiser. What type of shotgun is it, and how many bullets can it hold?

  1. Alot of police officers carry around 9 millimeeters that look exactly like this

  2. The shotgun is most often the Remington 870 with the shorter barrel and extended magazine. 9mm Glock and Sig Sauers are very common. Also the same in 40 caliber. But there are others that are appropriate. Still a lot of 1911 Colts around. Some departments issue weapons. Some have the officers buy their own within some department standards. Don't worry about how many rounds they hold. If they do a tactical reload, they just keep on coming. Between the pistol and my belt, I've got forty, and that's in .45. It would be more in 9mm.

  3. I know a bunch of police officers carry 9mm glock.  I have a friend in the police academy and he said that is the gun of choice.  9mm is the preferred caliber of their handguns I do believe.

  4. We carry remington 870 12 gauge shotguns. They carry 4 in the tube and 4 in the stock. We have a wide variety of handguns that we are allowed to carry. I carry a sig p220, 45 cal. Eight in the mag 1 in the chamber.

  5. Around here the most popular model of handgun for police to use is Glock 22 chambered for the .40 S&W cartridge.  It has a standard magazine capacity of 15 rounds.   Other sidearms include the Glock 17 chabered for the 9mm cartridge and has a 17 round magazine.  Our Conservation Officers carry Sig P-220 chambered in .45 ACP with an 8 round magazine.

As for Shotguns the most common is the Remington 870 P (for Police).  They have a standard 4 round tube magazine under the barrel.  Other shotguns include Mossberg 500 cruiser and presuader models (holding 5 rounds in it's tube magazine) and Ithaca 37 and 87 models.

  6. The answer varies from city to city and department to department

most agencies use .40 caliber semi-automatic handguns or .45 caliber and 12 gauge pump shot guns, but some use other equipment

  7. A loaded Glock or Luger.

  8. WHAT KIND OF LAME QUESTION IS THIS?

  9. It varries, theres no way to say for certain, some police agencies will even let their officers carry their own weapon so long as it's on a pre-approved list.

The most common ones though are the .40 or 9mm Glock and the .38 S&W. I've seen some officers using Sig's now as well.

As for the in car gun, I've seen MP5's, Remmington 870's (I think), various other shotguns, AR-15's, etc.

  10. I can't really say but they are most likely using 9 millimeter hollowpoint as ammunition. Handguns they carry usually have either 9 or 15 rounds depending on which handgun their department decides to use.

Could be beretta, sig sauer, glock, smith and wesson... There's so many that they use as standard issue and they keep changing. Looking at a cops piece is not a good idea where I'm from anyway.

Shotgun also varies I believe. You should be concerned about the taser. Don't tase me bro.

  11. Most police forces require a minimum of a .40 or 10mm calibre semi-auto with at least one additional reload.

Some police forces still issue 9mm, as does the military, but it is becoming more rare as the .40 calibre handguns become better able to handle recoil.

A standard police shotgun is a 12ga with 6 to 8 shots in the magazine, one in the barrel and up to 8 on the stock.

  12. its up to the department on what gun their officers carry. a lot of departments carry the brand GLOCK.

forget what the shotgun is called but they hold 7 rounds in the chamber.

  13. There is no one answer.  Different departments carry different weapons.  Size of the city does not matter.

Some departments allow the officer to carry anything they can qualify with.  So you get officers on the same department carrying weapons that range from a 9 mm to a .45 cal.

Some departments issue their officers the weapons they want them to carry.

For ease, let's look at the weapon that the majority of departments issue, the Glock.  This is due, primarily, to budget.  The Glock is a very inexpensive weapon, that is still reliable.  Some Glocks carry up to 19 rounds of 9mm.  See, even with the most common, there is still no one answer.

As far as the shotgun, again, no one answer.  The most common is the Remington 870.  These can carry 4 to 6 rounds.

    So, no one answer.

  14. It varies. It is up to the officer. Mossbergh(sp?) and Smith & Wesson are usually the most popular shotguns.

Glocks, S&W, and Beretta are pretty popular as far as pistols go.

  15. In my area, they gave up their 9mm for .40 calibers because they have better stopping power.

Most of the handguns have 8 or 10 round clips.

Shotguns are .12 ga and many are "tactical" models.  They generally hold between 3 and 5 rounds, depending on the model and whether or not they go with modified magazines.

  16. Typically you will find a policeman/woman using a Compact G19 by Glock which uses a 12 mm bullet. Sometimes another model made by Glock will be used. You can read about them here :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glock_17

Of course there are policemen that will use rifles as well but that is usually out in the woods. If they ever need to be really bad *** they'll grab a shotgun or machine gun.

  17. Police officers carry either a 9mm glock or a .40 or a .45

Their shotgun is just a tactical pump shotgun 12. gadge.

the hand grip on the tactical makes it more accurate and deadlier.  The round is usually a 12 gadge slug

  18. I see many of them carrying Glocks.

  19. the shotgun is a 12gauge pump action shotgun but I forgot  how many  shells they carry...I think its about 7.the pistol can be a heckler and kock usp which can carry 12 bullets and its seriously deadly.

  20. Why don't you ask your local law enforcement office? I am sure they would love to talk to you.

  21. the kind that kills

  22. they usually have the standard 9mm. some prefer a Glock or.40 caliber

  23. Glock semi-automatic polymer-framed handguns are the single most widely used handguns in law enforcement.  To the best of my knowledge, the .40 caliber round has overtaken the 9mm as the most widely used round in law enforcement.  I believe the standard Glock .40 cal holds 14+1 (meaning 14 rounds in the clip and 1 preloaded into the chamber).

The Remington 870 pump shotgun is the best selling shotgun in history and is often a choice of law enforcement.  A typical shotgun holds 6-8 shells depending on the ammo tube size.

  24. lots of them prefer .40 cal. Glocks

the shotgun i can't help you with...

  25. Around my area they carry Glocks. I live in Salinas Ca. gang capital

Shotgun = Pump action 12 gauge.

  26. the have a Berreta (a pistol) A shot gun 12 gauge and know a assault rifle in their trunks

  27. The kind of service pistol usually varies for each officer and law enforcement agencies, but pistols are usually limited to .38 Special (almost never used now), .357 Magnum, 9MM Parabellum/Luger, .40 Smith & Wesson, and .45 ACP ammunition.

And the models of weapon that uses these cartridges can have different capacities.

.38 Special and .357 Magnum are typically used in revolvers, which hold 6 cartridges in the revolver drum.

Semi-automatic magazine-fed pistols vary in their capacities depending on size and stack configuration of the magazine.

For instance, a typical government model or combat commander M1911A1 .45 ACP pistol configured for single-stack magazines can have a maximum capacity of 7 cartridges. A Beretta 92FS (a.k.a. the M9 by the U.S. Armed Forces), which uses the 9MM parabellum cartridge, typically uses a staggered-stack (or double-stack) magazine that can hold 15 cartridges, though magazines manufactured for the U.S. civilian market during the Assault Weapons Ban limited the capacity to 10 cartridges.

Quite a few police officers tend to use Glock 22 pistols chambered for .40 S&W.

Glock pistols because they are relatively lightweight, very reliable, and can operate even when neglected (though it's a very bad habit not to properly maintain your weapon since this risks a malfunction during use, which is something you don't want if you're in a situation where you are depending on it to help you out of a deadly encounter).

.40 S&W because it's seen as a compromise between the .45 ACP (big and slow) and the 9MM (small and fast).

As for shotguns, typical models may include the Remington 870, Mossburg 590A1, or the Benelli M4.  Shotguns can hold anywhere between 4 to 7 12 gauge cartridges, depending on model and configuration.

The best advice, however, is for you to actually go to a shooting range and try these weapons out for yourself as well as to talk to the people who are there, particularly the range master and any police officers who may be there for practice. The experience may help you out in your research.

  28. standard 357 magnum
