What type of F1 engineer?

Hey guys

I have to pick my uni courses for the first time by the end of september and pretty much I want to end up at the top of McLaren, pretty much where Ron Dennis is now.. I know, I'm dreaming big... but yeah I think I should start up as an F1 Engineer for the company... so a couple of questions...

I'm not too interested in Electrical Engineering, so what about either Mechanical, Mechatronics or Aerospace (because as far as I'm aware there's no aerodynamical engineering :(... )

also wondering on what the starting salary would be and yeah what would be the details of the job, I'm thinking of going to uni in australia (as that's where I live) but should I move to the uk right away?

Would I be able to pick up an apprenticeship/traineeship or whatever when I'm a couple of years into the uni course?

Would I be stationed just at Woking, or would I need to get with like ugghhh Force India first and work my way up into McLaren...?

Thanks guys!

  1. What uni are you planning on going to?

If you were to choose aeronautical engineering, then here are, in my opinion, the 4 best unis in the UK (Assuming you move here).

    1. Imperial College London - Honda have a wind tunnel here. And there are several f1/motorsport groups. Around 20% of those who express a desire to work in f1 get to do just that at ICL. IC Racing is the name of the Formula Student team.

    2. Sheffield. V.good uni for aeronautics, only problem is, Sheffield's only link with any car companies is with Rolls Royce, who actually make aircraft engines, their other links are with Boeing and Airbus. However they do still take part in Formula Student.

    3. Loughborough - They receive bursaries from Ford and apparently stick very close to the motorsport stuff than to the aeroplane stuff.

    4. Kingston is a good one. They have their own learjet, which certainly benefits any AE students.

Nottingham is another good one, but I don't know much about it.

Starting salaries for AE graduates are usually in excess of £20k.

It's really a choice you should make on your own, this is just advice, I will say this though. Any job in F1 is incredibly hard to get, whether you work at Force India or McLaren, so if you are lucky enough to get a job at Force India, you shouldn't dismay.

  2. not sure about answering ur q correctly but....i can answer one thing tht-

there is an course to become aerodynamisit....i remember Nico Rosberg(ya the williams f1 driver and son of Keke Rosberg) was going to do that before his father forced him to become an f1 racer....

and one more thing...(hope it happens though wat i am saying)...maybe force india may become an top team before you become an engineer...and (not sure this must happen or not) McLaren may become an midfielder,.....still will u join McLaren..???

If yes den u gonna have some bad time as an f1 engineer.....and maybe u may be termed as unprofessional...!!
