  1. A valid United States Passport might do the trick.

  2. If you have a checking account, sign the check, write "For Deposit Only" on the back of the check along with your bank account number and mail the check to the bank with a deposit slip.

If you don't have a bank account or ID, then how do you cash other checks?  The state of Michigan has an ID card for those who do not have driver's licenses.

  3. If you will take it to a bank or Credit Union and tell them you want to use it to open an account they will try their best to find some way to help you out.

Do you have school student identification?

  4. If you have a checking account, just deposit it there or cash it out against the account.  Your ATM/Debit card and PIN number will be sufficient in that case.

Otherwise, you'll need to provide some for of photo ID such as State ID Card, passport (valid or expired both work), etc.  You can also ask someone you trust such as a parent or sibling to deposit or cash the check for you and give you the proceeds.  I did this for my boyfriend with no problem, although it depends on the bank's policies regarding 3rd party checks.

Depending on why you don't have your driver's license or other form of photo ID, there should be a line of text somewhere on the front of the check that says it's void after a specified period of time.  IRS checks are usually at least 90 days, if not longer, so you have plenty of time to figure this out.

  5. You will need whatever kind of ID the check casher requires.  If you have a bank account, checking or savings, you can deposit it there and withdraw what you need.
