  1. Fiction Ty boo

  2. It's called "Crane style c**p Fu"

  3. Supposedly it was based on Okinawan Style since Pat morita's character was from Okinawa,Japan although in actuality they more or less made it up as they went along.

  4. im sure it was an Okinawan style of karate and an interesting fact is neither one of them really new karate they took a 6 week crash course in that style before the movies came out

  5. This was actually one of the greatest martial arts films ever.  It truly captured the imagination.

Neither Pat Morita or Ralph Machio knew karate.

The style was primarily Goju, but for the film, it was "Miyagi- Do Karate", a family based system of the Miyagi family.

It is true, that the crane kick was made up for drama, but wasnt the drama great?

    James

  6. Please don't believe any of that bullshit philosophy they advocated in that film. (well, except the mercy and restraint bit)

    Worst martial art film, ever.

It's definately an Okinawan style because Mr, Myagi was Okinawan. I don't know whether the film portrayed accurate Okinawan Karate, though. Perhaps that's something Katana will know.  Here are the following I know of:

    Uechi-Ryu

    Goju-Ryu

    Shorin-Ryu

    Isshin-Ryu

As far as I'm aware of most of the Karate styles emphasize a fairly equal measure of basic technique training (repitition of a particular technique), sparring, and forms. Forms, or kata, as they are called, are stylized patterns of attacks and defenses done in sequence for training purposes.

YOU CAN NOT WIN A FIGHT ON FORMS ALONE!

And you don't learn to fight from just doing household chores.

Also, a little known trivia is that the "Crane kick" technique does not exist in any form of Karate or Kung Fu. It was specifically invented by Darryl Vidal - one of only three legitimate black belts on the cast or crew - for the film. Vidal has stated that the Crane kick has "very little practical application".

  7. Stuff that will never work in today's world.

  8. It was a terrible display of OKINAWAN GOJU  and if it was ever shown in OKINAWA it probably had the local GOJU guys rolling on the floor with laughter.

Hey HAMMY I thought "get your dumb *** out of the way of his fist/foot" was pretty good advice of course they had to YODA it and have him say "best defence no be there daniel san"

That's all you have to do find some little old guy who talks like YODA wax his car paint his fence sand his deck learn to stand on one foot and you to can beat up any number of tough guys.

  9. It was in several articles about 15-20 years ago.. I wish I could find them...

But the main idea was that it was based on Goju. The family is Miyagi. It was from Okinawa. And they did part of Seienchin kata in the second movie.

Is it good Goju? No, of course not.

Is it a good movie? Well, opinions will differ but, personally, it is one of the best movies ever made on martial arts. Of course, it is hard to be worse than a VanDamme movie or a Seagal movie... or any of the other c**p that somehow gets released to the public.

And please remember that this movie is 20 years old. Look at all the movies from the 80s and before and you can remember that most of them were pretty cheesy.

  10. Actually the style that was reperesented was Goju-Ryu karate, although the Cobra Kais style was made up. Intereting side note that the founder of Goju-Ryu, which is an Okinawin style, was named Chojin Myagi.
