I am doing a model of an elevator for an assignment like the one below. I was just wondering what type of pulley system the diagram on this link would be classified as:

P.s I know that a "real" elevator is an example of a block and tackle pulley, however i need to know what this "model" would be classified as - EXACTLY the way it is shown. Please help!

  1. Don't get hung up on the EXACTLY as shown, because there is a mistake in it.

Notice that there is an angle from the top pulley down to the cab. as the elevator lowers this angle will change to be less severe and the cable loop will slacken.

The correct design would have one pulley over the cab with both the loop and the counterweight on it.

Since the design is obviously amateurish and c**p I wouldn't bother trying to find a name for it. Just do your design correctly.

  2. I don't think it has a specific name.

A block is a single or multiple pulley, where one or a number of sheaves are enclosed in an assembly between cheeks or chocks.

In your model, you still have pulleys, but no blocks. And you always will have the tackle.

    It's just a pulley system.....

  3. I would say it looks like a mass balancing system.
