  1. a) mimicry - looks like another living organism - the viceroy butterfly looks like the toxic monarch butterfly and the similarity keeps animals from eating it, even though it's harmless

    b) camouflage - has colors and/or behaviors that allow it to blend in to the surroundings  - an example would be an ermine which has a white coat in winter to blend into snow

    c) artifical selection - when an outside influence causes breeding to take place in a non-random fashion - the parents have traits which are specifically selected and the animals or plants with these traits are allowed to breed - an example would be all the different breeds of cats and dogs that exist

    d) vestigial structures - those which may have once served a purpose, but no longer do - these structures will generally be smaller than those in organisms which have similar functional structures - an example would be a person's tailbone.
