Below is a link to a photo that I took in Kansas. The entrance of the burrow is approximately the size of a quarter, and the curved track extending from the entrance is approximately eight inches long. Does anyone know what type of animal made it?

  1. It looks like the burrow of a Tarantula Hawk to me.

Tarantula Hawks are a type of wasp that is black with red wings. They have an interesting feeding/breeding habit.

Tarantula Hawks will often find tarantulas and inject them with a toxin that won't kill them, but will completely paralyze them. Then the tarantula hawk will drag the tarantula back to the burrow, where it will lay one single egg on top of the paralyzed tarantula. When the egg hatches, the paralyzed but still alive tarantula becomes the newborns first meal. It will eat the tarantula alive.

    interesting huh?

    hope that helps!
