It appears that a small animal has dug a burrow in a mound of straw at the back of our garden, and there is a little "garbage pile" of hazel nut shells directly above the entrance. At first I thought it must be a squirrel, but then I found out that squirrels only nest in trees. Does anyone know what type of animal may have taken up residence in our straw pile?

  1. Many of the rodents will eat hazel nuts.  And don't give up on squirrels.  Your burrow may be just the site he puts his hazelnut for later snacking.  Mine does that with acorns.  I quite surprised how many he stores away for winter (and how many he forgets he stored away)

  2. A field mouse or a rat

  3. Yep, I bet it is a big chubby mouse!  :o)

  4. Probably a small field  mouse nothing to worry about

  5. Some kind of rat, not the nasty city kind either
