  1. I think you should use would chips but that could hurt there feet. Here is what i use i use those wood shavings that are really thin they work excellent. And the rats love it.

  2. CareFresh is a really good bedding for pet rats & hamsters.  I used to use wood chips, but they were extremely dusty.  I switched to the carefresh and its great.  Very absorbent, good odor control, easy to clean, not dusty, and my rats and hamsters love it!

  3. if you decide to use wood shavings, make sure you DON'T use pine or cedar, as these can irritate your rats' respiratory systems.  i've heard that carefresh can be pretty dusty, although i've never tried it myself.  i line my rats' cage with pieces of fleece, and put yesterday's news in their litter boxes, and that seems to work fine.

  4. A down mattress topper, a fitted and top sheet patterned with their favorite colors, a chenille blanket, and a down comforter in a tasteful duvet.

  5. You might look into the same kind that is used for ferrets.

I didn't know about that kind when I had my rat, and I used the dust free pine shavings.

And, there's always the paper towels.

  6. Any type of cedar or pine chips is bad for rats because it will give them respiratory problems.  Personally I always hear to use Carefresh.  It's like shredded cotton.  My hairless loves it, it doesn't smell, easy to clean, doesn't get everywhere, inexpensive, and doesn't make him sneeze.

  7. u can buy bedding from pet shops or just use PLAIN toilet rol not scented or colored just plain they love it that wt i give to myn its cheaper aswel its like £1 od for a small bag of bedding from a pet shop or £1 for 2 rolls of cheap toilet paper and last much much longer

  8. Carefresh, Aspen, fleece fabric (wash daily), Yesterday's News, etc.

Fleece fabric is a great & inexpensive way to line your cages.

Personally, I use Yesterday's News as it's great for odor control, and the rats don't send it flying out of the cage when they sift through it. Not dusty at all, too.

I would use the fleece materials, but I haven't got around to it yet. I'm definitely considering on switching. It'll be less expensive. :)

  9. cedar and pine bedding is very hurtful to the rats lungs so DONT get it. it will cause respiratory problems for life and can end up killing them. i use CAREFRESH. it isnt dusty and they seem to really like it but you can also use aspin. but i wouldnt recommend it because it can scrape there feet...

  10. i use either aspen or soft sorbent for my rats and i give them napkins and bath tissue in their nest boxes. i used carefresh before but the dust gave my guys breathing difficulty. other wise yesterday's news, aspen, or soft sorbent all work well.

  11. Yesterday's News and Carefresh are popular choices. My personal favorite is Yesterday's News, because it's a lot less dusty than Carefresh and not as likely to have mites in it.

I use that for their litter, and fleece blankets to line their cage. You can just shake them off, wash them, and put them back on. It's a good option.

  12. Aspen is nice.  Carefresh in my experience just makes everything stink more.  Yesterday's news is good too.

I use Fleece for most my cages, but I have one cage of boys where the fleece just made the whole thing smell awful.  It is a plastic bottom/wire cage.  So I don't know if it was from the cage design or from the boys or what, but I ended up switching to using aspen in the bottom.  Just make sure you freeze it for about 48 hours first to kill any potential mites.

  13. Yesterdays News is probably the best form of bedding for rats. It's not only very dust-free but it also controls the smells very well. However, it is quite spendy. If you're looking for a well-priced type of bedding, grain and feed stores carry 50 lb bags of alfalfa pellets(usually used as bunny feed.) that practically do the exact same thing as Yesterday's News except you get much much more and for a better price.

Also. I tend to be fond of the alfalfa smell. :D So perhaps you would consider that as well.
