I live in the Pasadena area and I'm looking to start biking to work because there is no way I will be buying a car anytime soon and I'm starting to get sick of the metro! The ride is about 5 1/2 miles each way. To work is all downhill, but back home is VERY uphill. I will be riding on streets and side walks only. What type of bike would you guys suggest? I am looking for something to make the trip uphill very easy, because when it comes down to it, I want to enjoy riding! I would rather not dread the ride home! I am not looking to spend a ton of money, considering I don't have a lot of money to spend. Are there any places online where I can get some really good deals??

  1. 5 1/2 miles isn't very long. If you are new to biking get a bike with a triple chain ring in the front. A mountain bike would be fine, a road bike frame is better. Very low gearing is what you need for steep hills and I know that Pasadena has some femur crushing grades, plus you will probably be carrying work clothes and stuff.

  2. The best bike for you would probably be a single speed road bike. Your not going to be shifting gears that much and the extra money would be a waste. Just pick out a strong road bike and that will do what you need it too. I wouldn't recommend a mountain bike because of the knobby tires that are made for off road ventures, this will only slow you down and make the uphill process more difficult and tiring. A composite road bike will make you more wind resistant because of the light frame and will make that ascent after work much easier. Giant and Trek make great bikes and are known for the quality of their products. Take a look at Giant and Trek's websites and hopefully you'll the bike thats made for you.
