  1. redline has great bikes but not too many seletions but anybike from them you will never have a bad time

  2. It very much depends on a) your price range and b) how you'll use it. If you're on a very tight budget  ($100 neighborhood) and just doing casual street riding, I'd take a look at the Schwinn's at Target (assuming you're in the US).  Although they're nowhere near the quality of a bike shop bike, they are much better than most of the bikes you get at Target, Wal-Mart, etc.

If you can spend $300 or more, visit your local bike shop, and they can give you some expert advice depending on your needs. There you can get a road bike (good for long commutes on roads but can be uncomfortable for casual or new riders); a mountain bike if you're planning on off-road riding (but the lighter ones are also fine for short commutes), or a hybrid (a cross between road and mountain - popular as commuter bikes.)

Besides road, mountain, and hybrid, there are also cruisers and comfort bikes. These are fun for casual riding on flat surfaces, but tend to be heavy and lack sufficient gears for hills. So I personally don't find these practical for transportation unless you live in a really flat place.

If your budget is somewhere in between $100 and $300, you might visit your local sporting goods store (REI and Sport Chalet are pretty good ones for bikes.) Sporting goods chains tend to sell bikes that are better quality than the Target/Wal-mart variety, but less expensive than the bike shop bikes. They're usually the lower end models of the same brands the bike shops carry. Some of these chains have knowledgeable people working in their bike departments, some don't.

If you do wind up at Target/Walmart, I'd try to stick with the Schwinns (Target.) I've heard the Roadmasters at Wal-mart are ok too, but haven't ridden one myself. I'd suggest staying away from the Magnas (Target). While you'll occasionally find one that works fine, they are often sold with faulty derailleurs, brakes, etc. This probably goes for many of the bikes sold at Target/Wal-mart/etc... the bikes aren't good quality, and the staff that assembles them aren't consistently knowledgable. But so far I've had good luck with my Target Schwinn, and I've read a number of other favorable reviews of those bikes. So if you need a cheap bike for casual commuting,  you might check those out.

  6. I would recommend a urban bike, for comfort.

    A road bike for speed.

Or a mountain bike for dirt and traction.

I recommend Trek and Bianchi bikes. They make great qualit bikes but they can be expensive, for a low budget rider I recommend Mongoose.
