What type of bird is this?

I found a bird today, it is bright yellow with a red beak and a red line around the back of it's neck and cheeks the line follows around to the beak but under the chin it is gray. Other than that I can't see any other markings on it other than it look very dirty and it has no tags/rings.

With my limited knowleage it looks like part of the lovebird family but I am really not sure.

  1. CooCooBaroo?

  2. Not sure about the grey under the chin, but other than that, it sounds like a lutino Indian Ringneck Parakeet.

If it is a ringneck, it belongs to someone. You should do your best to attempt to locate the owner.

On-line you can search lost pet listings on craigslist, kijiji, petfinders, and 911 parrot alert. Please post found ads. They're free. Identify the species, but do not give specifics. Make sure the "owner" can describe the bird perfectly.

Don't forget to contact your local animal shelters, humane societies, vet clinics, and pet stores. Ask if you can post notices, or leave a found report.

Look at your local newspaper, and check the classifieds on-line. Running lost and found ads is often free.

    As for care:

If you don't have a cage, you can put the bird in a pet carrier lined with newspaper. Give it a water in a heavy coffee cup, or other dish that won't tip over.

The bird will need food. They can eat a diet similar to cockatiels, with a few additions. Cockatiel seed is ok for now.  The bird is probably a bit starved and it can use the calories.

If you don't have seed, you may have these things on hand:

    Romaine lettuce (not iceberg)

Other fresh dark leafy greens (no onions)

    Carrots, bell peppers, sweet potatoes

Bananas, apples, other fruit. Never feed pits or seeds.

Frozen peas, corn or carrots. Can be offered frozen. It will thaw fast.

Unsweetened cereal: Cheerios, Rice Krispies, Chex, etc.

Whole wheat bread - fed fresh and sliced into strips.

Cooked and cooled pasta, rice or beans with a touch of vegetable oil (no butter).

No milk, no avocado, no sweets, no junk food.

Best of luck to you. Contact me if you need add'l help.
