Question:

What type of board should my next one be?

last year, may through august I learned to surf on a 6'6 yancy spencer fun board. very wide. In september, I decided to buy a 6'3 JC Hawaii 3D-X shortboard. Low entry rocker and all. It works great in the waist to head waves (I haven't really been able to test it well in overhead, i'm wiping out a good 90% of the time on 7+ waves. When the waves get to about 2-3 catching the waves can get iffy when the waves don't have much power. I've been surfing 3-5 times per week this summer. I'm pretty much an intermediate surfer at this point. I'm trying to figure out what type of board can work well and catch easy in the powerless 1-3ft and still work in the powerful waist to head.

I like the feel of my JC Hawaii board, if anyone knows a Carper board that can suit my needs or another (maybe better?) type of board?

I surf in Jersey too. However, plan to go to NC hopefully this winter and Ireland hopefully next summer with a buddy. If that helps in any way...

  1. wow, i have the exact same problem as you. i surf jersey too. i have problem duckdiving also. but anyway i would prefer that you get like 9'0 longboard, you can surf any wave really with a longboard. and if you want a short board get like a fat fish board thats around 6'0. but anyway good luck and i hope you find a board that fits you well.

  2. Check out a high performance longboard perfect for small surf and larger surf a super versatile board.

help yourself, the whole menue is there for your choosing. They are nice boards, but since they are CAD shaped, and hence clones.  So if you like a given model, you get exactly what you expect.

I am not sure exactly what you are asking, but if you are having trouble with 3-5 foot New Jersey waves, and you are doing well enough on your 3D-X, try the flying fish.

Now, where do you surf in NJ that you have head more than two or three days of head high waves this summer? Good luck, and tell us how Ireland was when you get back.
