  1. Q:  What type of bullets to get for a 38 special?

A:  For practice and target nearly any .38 Special round will do.  Wadcutters were once used exclusively for competitive target shooting as they tend not to rip the paper target.  These, however, tend to lead-up your barrel.  For defensive purposes it is critical that you stay away from any ball ammo in .38 Special.  This includes the old police special 158 grain lead ball round and the 130 grain full metal jacket round.  The .38 Special needs all the help it can get as a decent stopper so go with a 110 to 125 grain quality hollow-point round from any of the major ammo makers:  Federal, Cor Bon, Winchester, Remington, etc...

I like the 110 grain Federal Personal Defense Hydra Shok round which I regularly load in one of my favorite concealed carry guns, a 2" barrel Colt Detective Special.  Winchester Silvertips is another good choice.  With quality defensive ammo the .38 Special is transformed into a really decent defensive revolver.

  2. Winchester 125 grain +P jacketed hollow point---, Winchester 125 grain +P Silvertip hollow point--, Winchester 158 grain +P lead- semi WC HP... Winchester Super Match 148 grain lead-wad cutter...*

  3. I agree with Speer Gold Dots. A heavier bullet will have deeper penetration than a lighter one too, but be careful of +P. make sure your gun can handle the higher pressure of the +P

  4. 125 grain semi jacketed hollow points with Hornady TAP ammo being one of the best performers for self defense. Anu of the quality hp ammo will work well. For practice, cheap wad cutter ammo is fine, but always remember to practice some with the ammo you carry for self defense.

  5. ummm......38 special would be a good idea.

  6. 110gr Corbon JHP or 123gr Lapua JHP

  7. I agree with the Speer Gold Dots.

  8. Ammo made by Winchester or Remington is your best bet. 148 grain lead wadcutters for target shooting and plinking. 158 grain lead semi-wadcutters for small-game hunting. self-defense, the Winchester 158 grain +P Lead Semi-Wadcutter Hollowpoint is an excellent round and the Remington 110 grain semi-jacketed hollow-point for a standard pressure self-defense load.

  9. personal defense look to the 110/125 JHP or Glaser safety Slug.

Training and practice 148 Hollow Base Wad Cutter, semi wad cutter  or lead round nose
