  1. it depends on weather you are talking about a digital or a film camera.

Most likely you are looking for a SLR camera.

if its film buy a Nikon FM10 with a 50mm lens

Its a great camera, with all manual controls.

a great starter camera, I had one to start with, and look where I am now!!

  2. Hello there:)

Your teacher is requesting an SLR camera.... either electronic  / film or digital.

The electronic film cameras are hard to find in new models because so much of photography has gone to digital, but Nikon still makes one or you could look around for the used models, which can be found on classified sites such as Craigslist.org, eBay, Photo.net, your local newspaper classifieds, bhphotovideo.com,  Adorama.com, camera shops,  pawn shops and the like.

Names and models of used film SLR

Canon AE-1 - Canon EOS Rebel

    Nikon FM10 - Nikon N65 - Nikon N80  - Nikon N90

Pentax K1000 - recommended highly for class photography

If you decide to go with a digital SLR  (and I would get the opinion of your teacher first because if developing film is part of the class requirement you will have no choice but to look for the film SLR)- you might want to go with a consumer entry model digital camera.

    Canon XTi -  Canon SXi

    Nikon D40 - Nikon D60

Both of the above will be much more expensive than the film version,  but you and your family would be able to enjoy it for years to come.

What you can  expect to pay for a film SLR and a couple of lenses would be from $150.00 to $250.00 - depending on where you get it.

What you can expect to pay for a digital SLR kit that comes with one or two lenses is from $450.00 to $850.00.

Hope that gave you a little information to go on.

I think you are really going to enjoy your photography... it is something to look forward to and a little break in the everyday subject matter.

    Thanks for reading.  :))

  3. A 35 mm SLR will do that ... you can find them on craigslist for under $150.

Here are some sample cameras in my area.

  5. That's a SLR (single lens reflex) camera. The ones you probably remember your parents using. These days, I'd imagine they'd want you to have a digital SLR as well. Here's the wikipedia entry on DSLRs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_sin...

Here's Amazon.com's list of best-selling DSLRs to give you an idea of the price range and best options. http://www.amazon.com/Digital-SLRs-Camer...

If that's too much, you might try looking on eBay or Craigslist, but be careful of scams.
