  1. No, if you're only going to take pictures of yourself, and friends, you have no need to get a digital SLR. I think you'd be fine off with a point and shoot digital camera ( on the more advanced side, and you can buy a more advanced camera later if you think you are a natural at photography), Let your camera grow with you. For what you're trying to do you don't need to spend any more than 350$. Alot of brands these days, like canon and nikon ( the two main ones of today )

i want the suggest the canon powershot s5, the advanced version of the canon powershpt s3is, which i have, and have no complaints about. Here' the http://amazon.com link :

it's three hundred and thirty dollars, which isn't that bad considering all that it can. I think you'll like it. :p

  2. Any P&S camera will do ... even a $100 camera.

Just be sure you buy one that uses a SD or SDHC memory card.

All the rush to higher pixel counts is half for marketing leverage and the other half so the user can make enlargements ... up to 11x14 inches in some cases.

  3. Hi Strawberry.  :)  I took a little time to read a bit about you and congrats on your upcoming happy day!!!!   Yes, you are going to need a nice camera,  as you are going to be taking tons of pictures.   Just about any well known name brand point and shoot camera will serve you well but you really should not skimp on the camera quality if you want beautiful and memorable family photos.   The point and shoot variety (already suggested) is your best bet.   Something in the 5 to 8 MP range will produce wonderful 4X6 prints which is what you mentioned you mostly want... but it will also give you a nice 5X7 and 8X10 as well.  And I know there are going to be some of the pictures that you will want to enlarge for framing, displaying and giving as presents.   Research Sony, Nikon, Canon brands to find a camera that best works for the hundreds of pictures you are going to expect it to take.  Good Luck and Best Wishes.
