  1. Ichabod's answer is pretty good... about the only other thing I could add would be that if you are going to be doing this for a while, take the money and time to invest in good gear.  After blowing out many pairs of boots, and countless backpacks I decided to get stuff that is made to last.  My daily field clothes are mostly from Filson, Carharrt, or other very heavy duty companies.  A lifesaver in heavy thorns have been my Filson tin chaps... they keep the thorns and nettles from irritating the legs as I go brush-busting.  Good boots that are fit for you are vitally important for daily comfort... I have a pair of Redwing boots that have held up amazing, and my feet never hurt or ache at the end of the day, and I have never once had a blister in them.  My pack is a Wanderer pack from the Duluth Pack company.  It is a heavy duty canvas pack that holds up MUCH better than any of the flimsy nylon packs, and it doesn't have zippers to jam or break in the middle of the field.  I guess rule number one for good gear - don't go to a big store like Walmart, and just remember, if the company has been around for a long time, there is a very good reason - they must be good.

  2. one a comfortable pair or boots goretex lined butnot reallyyinsulateds ,leather, hat, as stupid as possible, but durable, loop on beltfor rockk hammerrloopp on belt for water knee pads if needed only,it hard to find a comfortable set, good heavy cotton cargo pantsthere'ss a reason for all those pockets, combo nylon ,wool socks your best bet is the thor lo brand, they may be expensive, but they live up towarrantyy, you will wear out your shoes before you wear out the socks. good luck from an old rock hound

  3. LOINCLOTHS   do you know what that is ???

  4. Most of the time there's no formal dress code. The informal coded leans to comfortable worn clothes that can get dirty. Large brim hats are common and shoe are often hiking boots. My dress is T-shirt, cargo pants and low topped hiking shoes.(packing 1st aid, water, tools, poncho and lunch)

The more stylish clothing (midriff exposing, sandals, exposed skin and I recall someone that showed up in a stylish all white outfit)) tend to be self correcting. Sunburn and thorns seem attracted to such outfits.

I did work a dig with the Forest service and was informed that dress included hard had and eight inch boots. Then was told "Waffle stompers tear up the pits) and not to worry.

Before going on a dig, check the forecast. Then assume rain, hot days and cold nights, with legions of bugs. Generally if any special gear is needed, you'll be told (or need to ask) As one set of instructions ran> "And more hard unremittingg labor in the hot sun.
