I'm in 6th grade and to do community service that would look good on a college application. I want to help the community obviously [hence the term, "community service"], but I don't really want to do daycare, elderly center, or hospital/vet type things. Something more scientific. I live around Phoenix, Arizona, so something around there would be good. Any community service ideas that are related to science a bit?

By the way, my middle school allows you to do community service and use it when your in high school.

  1. What do you think about volunteering at a homeless shelter for women and children?

  2. In missouri we have what are called "Stream Teams" you can look them up on the missouri department of conservation page http://www.mdc.mo.gov/programs/.  a little ways down on the page.  They monitor streams for water quality and other things - look to see if arizona has things like that.  See if there is a botanical garden around to volunteer at

  3. cleaning up ditches and waterways... also google science related community service. Flood relief..... there is a lot of mold and other things that you help clean up during floods.  I do 150 hours of community service at my local college and we also have a forensic science major and ecology biology clubs. They did adopt a high way.. if you like looking at dissection you could always help your department of transporation pick up road kill. See if there are any active college clubs that would welcome you to help out.
