I've been so down on myself lately and absolutely no joy has come into my life. I've been so depressed and can't let go of problems with friends (being ignored and purposely emotionally hurt), not enjoying school, etc.

I am going to go to college in about 2 years to become a Personal Support Worker.

In the meantime I want to finish school (upgrading) and find a volunteer job.

What are the most fulfilling volunteer jobs? I want to reach out to someone and help others and shed a tear for a meaninful purpose other than my own problems...and possibly feel more appreciated and appreciate myself when others don't.

I have experience working in nursing homes, what other places can I volunteer at?

  1. The jobs that are most fulfilling for volunteering purposes are those that you feel you will learn alot more than just an ordinary job. For instance, if you help the sick and the disabled, you will not only begin to appreciate the job but begin to appreciate life very much so.

    Hope this helps.

  2. try volunteering in communities of people with developmental disabilities.. try searching for l'arche

  3. I'm biased, because this is my line of work... but I think a great way to volunteer, when you really want to interact with people and help them get through a rough time in their lives, is to do hospital calls for your local domestic violence or sexual assault program.  This may sound intimidating, but the training is usually very extensive, and the work is important.  Contact your local women's shelter or sexual assault advocacy program if you are interest.

  4. If you wish you can try to help us.  We are sincerely in need of someones kindness as this is a rare trait. If you sincerely wish to help contact me.

  5. I volunteer two ways and find both fulfilling.  I work fulltime (alot of overtime), and spend a lot of time commuting so don't have a lot of time for scheduled volunteer activities, so prefer volunteering that lets me do it when I have the time.  I also am hard of hearing which limits what I am comfortable doing so I prefer things that don't involve a lot of verbal interaction with people.

I volunteer as a dog walker/socializer at an animal shelter and like knowing that by teaching dogs to walk on a leash and interact appropriately with people I am making them more adoptable.  The nice thing is dogs are not judgemental the way people are so you have a chance to just interact without wondering what they are thinking.  I do recommend that if you do this you find a no-kill shelter though.  I started out at one that euthanized dogs every few weeks and it was too depressing...

But most of my volunteering involves knitting for charity.  I love to knit and there is always a need somewhere for blankets and clothes.  I donate hats to a local children's home and outdoor wear to a local domestic violence shelter.  I also am involved with an online group that collects for different agencies every month--baby stuff for hospital nurseries, hats for the military, mats for shelter animals, and various blankets and clothing items for every age from newborn to elder.  If you know how to knit or crochet or sew (or are interested in learning) that is a way to be involved.  The nice part is you can do it when it is convenient for you so could make things while riding in the car/waiting for a dr appt/during a lunch break/ while watching tv and then if you are delivering to a local agency you go when it is convenient for you.  While you don't get much interaction with the people you help, if you join a group either that meets regularly or online that does this kind of thing (and there are quite a few) you can make friends with people who have a common interest.
