  1. Technically they are Soldiers, like American MP's. That said, they also do everything. Cops are to the Italian what newspapers are to an American. We have a million different kinds! That said, papers tell us news, right? So Italian cops do the usual cop things. They do have really stylish uniforms though! And they are packing. First time I saw a cop with a machine gun! If you need help, don't hesitate to ask them. Particularly if its something serious. If you lost your phone card or whatever, ask the municipal police. If a man kidnapped your daughter, its serious. You get the idea right?

  2. it depends on who comes first on the crime scene, their tasks are much the same.

  3. The Carabinieri are a military force with military, civilian and National Security tasks. They have “Stations” and “Operational Units” in all Italian towns, but have a high number of specialized units that give them a unique position in crime prevention, control and pursuit. Another particular aspect is the overseas peace keeping tasks they are assigned  in many parts of the World. They have been cited as the ideal Military force with Civilian duties by both the UN and NATO.

Italy has a number of specialized units like the Coast Guards and  the Financial Guards (both Military with civilian tasks) and the State Police (civilian troops who report to the Ministry of Interior) with less offices than the Carabinieri, but more traffic duties on the Super Highways. It sounds complicated but it’s really quite simple and there is a central coordination between Ministries and a series of inter force units. All in all it’s one of the most efficient systems in Europe.

  4. It is like the police; you can call one of them if you are in trouble, it's the very same, the only difference is that Carabinieri are a military force and the police is not.
