What type of degree do i need to become a librarian?

  1. Check with the type of library in which you want to work.  In some areas, you need two masters (don't know why) in order to work as a librarian.  But I agree, an MLIS will get you in the door somewhere, and the older degree shouldn't matter.  You may have to take a few "remedial" courses, which can sometimes be taken in the first semester after you are accepted.  

    PS Most degrees are now Masters in Library and Information Sciences, which correctly adds the broader scope of what librarians do these days.


  2. If the degree you have is a Bachelors, your absolute best option would be to get a Masters degree in Library Science or Masters in Library and Information Science (MLS or MLIS).

    I have several friends in the field, and they tell me it is pretty competitive.  Even so, having that Masters degree will give you a great shot at a librarian position.  I'm sure that the secondary ed experience should be some great backup experience, too.
