  1. Usually a 4-6 year degree in Education.

  2. Just wanted to add to a-teacher.  If you are in CA then you are required to take the assessments regardless of what you major in.  You will have to take the CBEST, CSET, and RICA (you won't take the RICA until you are enrolled in a credential program.)  If you are choosing to only teach a single subject then when you take the CSET you only take your specialized area.

  3. usually an undergrad + at least u are workign on yr masters....

  4. My major was in Elementary Education and my minor was in English.  I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Educational Administration.  I've been teaching for 23 years and really enjoy it.

  5. Liberal studies or child developlment

  6. depends on the state...

California requires a minimum 4year degree (bachelors) plus 1 year of teacher preperation program (credentialing- at university).  Then when you get a teaching job you do two years of a Beginning Teachers Support and Assessment program, then finally are awarded a credential...

For the 4 year degree, in California, its recommended that you major in Liberal Arts/Liberal Studies...this is usually designed for people that want to go into elemetary teaching, but any degree will do.  But, look at the required assessments you must take; there may be more if you don't go through Liberal Studies/Arts.

There are some pros and cons if you go either way.  For example...if you get a 4 year degree in Math or Science and decide to go into elementary ed later...there may be some extra assessments or requirements you need to do compared to the Liberal Studies major...but your advantage will be the fact that you have a 4 year degree in math or science and may be able to teach those subjects in High/middle school if you find out the youngest kids isn't your forte...

many options...talk to you university advisor or highschool counselors.  Talk to any teacher friends you may have...

    good luck

To Momma Betsy--indeed, things have changed...thanks for the added info

  7. Everyone pretty much answered your question, but just to add some info... Many schools also offer students the opportunity to obtain your BA and credential @ the same time.
