  1. Sociology

    Behavioral Sciences

Human Services (this is most likely an associate or certificate degree)

  2. Maybe none, it depends on the non-profit.  Hiring requirements at non-profits are pretty much like at a for-profit employer.

  3. All sorts of degrees are needed by nonprofits -- marketing, business, biology, sociology, archeology, human resources management, medicine, engineering, theater -- it depends on the nature of the nonprofit's work, what positions it has available, etc.

To be qualified for a community outreach position, pursue a degree in marketing, public relations or journalism.

For volunteer coordination, there is no degree -- there are volunteer management courses that are a part of nonprofit and business management degrees, some universities have certificate programs in volunteer management, and there are non-credit workshops sponsored by a variety of agencies, such as the United Way. In addition, there are a plethora of books available on the subject; try http://www.energizeinc.com for the most comprehensive resource on volunteer management-related books.

If you want to specialize in work with nonprofits focused on animals, you should acquire all of the volunteering experience you can with such organizations during your studies.
