in a week's time I am about to start co-ed English Language Course which would be residence-based. Because there will be male and female participants, do I need to set any rules of discipline for the group so that they behave well towards each other or I expect that they are adults and would take care of themselves.

  1. you need the discipline of kung fu.

  2. You can expect problems but if you take the Drill Sargent approach you can scare the c**p out of them, threaten to fail them, and reward them for being good...works like a charm,I use it on my kids when they don't behave.

  3. If you're teaching adults: Start off by telling them what your expectations are for their behavior.  Different teachers have different rules and want different things.  You'll be helping them by letting them know what you want from the beginning.

    Examples:

Do you take attendance?  Do you care if they're late?

What happens if they miss an assignment or turn it in late?

Is food or drink allowed in the class?

You can talk with them about being respectful to one another - if that is your concern.

If you're teaching younger students: Definitely set rules at the beginning and include them in the process.  Ask them what they think the class rules should be.  They'll be more receptive if they have ownership in the rules.
