What type of dog should we get?

I am living with the love of my life and we need help deciding on the type of dog we should get. We are both working professionals. She works 12 hour days and I work 12 hour nights, the same three days a week. We both lead active lifestyles. We are thinking about either a German Shepard or an AmStaff. Which one do you think is best for us? Do you have any other suggestions?

German Shepard are nice dogs plus are protective dogs, have you considered getting a Great Dane?

I would have to go with a German Shepard. Beautiful dogs, very protective of there owners and great watch dogs. And there good with kids. I love boxers though but there very hyper.

German Shepard great guard dogs and good with kids.

I myself like Labrador Retrievers.

German Shepherds need lots of mental stimulation and training, or they get bored and destructive.  They really need 2 walks a day of at least 30 minutes brisk pace and I would strongly advise doing dog training.  When looking for a puppy, check out the parents very closely for fear or agression (the puppies learn from the mum).  

If you have the time for this then the German Shepherd is a great dog.  However, just a warning, great danes although larger need less exercise and are quite good dogs for flats.  German shepherds need more exercise and stimulation.
